Japan will begin to aggressively market its cutting-edge mobile technology abroad, especially the nation's popular "wallet phone." The Asian nation boasts some of the most sophisticated cell phones in the world -- delivering high-speed Internet connections, digital TV broadcasts and video downloads -- but has failed to make a mark overseas.

Bonanza for some, kill switch for others Analysis Apple is as usual dazzling the market with stunning headline figures that frequently overshadow underlying problems and dissatisfaction with its iconic iPhone and associated services. As bullish analysts say the device is set to sell almost 4.5 million units this quarter on the back of aggressive international expansion, CEO Steve Jobs crowed that the AppStore, launched a month ago with the 3G iPhone, has already processed 60 million downloads and is generating $1m a day in sales of paid-for software, and could crack the half-billion dollar mark within a year of opening.…

An anonymous reader writes "I have my own domain, which has its own email server, where I receive all my personal email. I've been getting about 800 emails a day, of which perhaps 20 are real. Suddenly, Sunday or Monday evening, the spam pretty much stopped. My volume of mail has plummeted to less than 100 a day, and as far as I can tell, I'm not missing any real mail — I'm still getting the email list subscriptions I'm expecting, and every time I ask someone to send me a test message, it gets through. My domain host insists that it doesn't do any spam filtering before mail gets to my inbox, and that they've changed nothing about their configuration. I run SpamAssassin on my server to mark, but not delete, spam, and download the whole mess to my home client, and I'm still seeing the occasional message tagged by SpamAssassin. But it's virtually all gone. And I haven't changed anything about my own mail configuration, or the harvestability of my site (my personal email has been harvestable for almost a decade). So what's going on? I can't believe that several major botnets would have vanished overnight. Any ideas?"Read more of this story at Slashdot.

1877: Thomas Edison suggests using the word hello as a telephone greeting. The idea catches on. Edison invented a lot of things, for sure, but one thing he didn't invent was the telephone. The brass ring for that one goes to Alexander Graham Bell, although Elisha Gray filed his patent for a similar device the same day. But they never called it Ma Gray, did they? Edison's contribution to the "improvement in telegraphy" was giving us the salutation now used the world over, in one form or another. Bell's famous first words spoken over what we now call the telephone -- "Mr. Watson, come here. I want to see you." -- were delivered without any greeting at all. When he did weigh in on the subject, Bell proposed using "ahoy, ahoy," the age-old seafarer's hail. And, in fact, ahoy was the first greeting used, until Edison suggested hello. At the time, the phone was conceived of as a business machine that would connect two offices with a permanently open line. Some people toyed with the idea of an alarm bell at each end to alert one office that the other office wanted to speak. On Aug. 15, 1877, Edison wrote to a friend who was setting up a phone system in Pittsburgh: "I don't think we shall need a call bell as Hello! can be heard 10 to 20 feet away. What do you think?" Contrary to some accounts, Edison did not coin the word. Halloo and variants had been used for ages to urge on hunting hounds and to shout to people at a distance. Edison was tinkering with a prototype phonograph

: Photo: mtowber/flickrThe invention of the electric meter made it possible to bill customers for electricity, creating the incentive to build out the nation's first network for moving electrons. The Grid, the system of dumb, buzzing wires that allows power to move across the country, is so important, it topped the National Academy of Engineering's top 20 triumphs of the 20th century. This gallery tours the history -- and future -- of making you pay for juice. Some time within the next few years, you're likely to get a new type of so-called "smart meter" that will mark the first real upgrade to electrical billing since your grandparents were born. Until the 1870s, electrical power wasn't used for much aside from telegraphs and telephones. But after the Edison's improvement of the incandescent light bulb, power was suddenly much more useful. The problem was, the few metering systems that tinkerers had built up until that time didn't actually work. So Edison resorted to a low-tech method: He charged for electricity on a per-lamp basis. In modern business model terms, Edison was giving away the blades to sell the razor. He would not have received venture capital for that idea. : Photo: Great Beyond/Flickr Throughout the 1880s, various inventors thought hard about the problem of how to measure the flow of electrons through time. Edison himself tried a two-electrode chemical system in which your charge was determined by how much zinc moved from one electrode to ano

After spending two weeks with the $130 Eye-Fi Explore Wi-Fi memory card, I'm a fan: The Eye-Fi Explore was introduced in July by the eponymous firm to support geotagging - embedding latitude and longitude into photo metadata - and easier uploading of images. The Eye-Fi Explore is a Secure Digital (SD) card with 2 GB of storage, a tiny computer, and a Wi-Fi radio. The Explore uses Skyhook Wireless's Wi-Fi positioning data combined with Wayport's network of 10,000 hotspots, mostly McDonald's, along with revised firmware and software that dramatically improves the experience of uploading photos. The company shuffled its products into three versions several weeks ago: Eye-Fi Home ($80), which uploads only to a specific computer over a local network; Eye-Fi Share ($100), a rebranded version identical to its first offering last year, which can upload to photo-sharing services or a computer or both; and the Explore. (You can purchase the Eye-Fi Explore from Amazon.com, as well as the other models.) I reviewed the Explore as a geotagging system for The Seattle Times this last Saturday; I'd reviewed the original Eye-Fi (now Eye-Fi Share) for them last year as well. You can read that review for my take on geotagging, or skip to the bottom of this review, as well. The hardware is apparently the same or nearly so, and it works just as well as it did last year. The biggest improvements, however, are a few workflow tweaks that make it far easier to manage and track uploads of pictures with

Yahoo on Tuesday announced general availability of Fire Eagle, which enables users to their mark their location on the Web and is being leveraged in applications such as travel and messaging systems.Featuring an API, Fire Eagle acts as an interface for managing and sharing location information. Users can authorize Web, mobile, or desktop applications to update location, and they can do it manually on the Fire Eagle Web site or mobile sites.Fire Eagle enables developers to build geo-aware applications, letting them focus on location without having to build the infrastructure to handle users' locations, Yahoo said. Yahoo has set up the Fire Eagle Developer Center, featuring documentation, support, and code for building location-aware services."Fire Eagle is a way for [people] to take their location to the Web," said Tom Coates, head of product at Yahoo Brickhouse, which shepherds startup projects. The software features privacy controls."Essentially, Fire Eagle is nothing more, nothing less than a store for a user's location," Coates said.Users can put in a name of a place and a street address and it updates location, said Coates. "What's more interesting is how it works as a switchboard," for location, he said. One action includes enabling users to make their make their location available via their mobile phone. In a beta release since March, more than 50 sites and services have been using Fire Eagle already, Coates said. Some of these companies lauded the service during Tuesday'

A user-friendly IRC client for the KDE Desktop environment. We are extremely pleased to announce Konversation's newest major release, v1.1. Konversation 1.1 is a special release for us in multiple ways: It's our farewell to KDE 3, by way of being the last major release built upon that venerable platform. It's also our biggest release yet, in terms of the number and magnitude of the changes. The additions and improvements in this release are both user-visible and under the hood. Some of the highlights are rewritten connection handling (robustness and correctness improvements, better support for IRC URLs, bookmarking and more), redone DCC with better UI and Passive/Reverse DCC support, a redone away system with the addition of auto-away support, redone and much more useful remember / marker line support, a new outbound traffic scheduler that is capable of aggressive throttling to avoid flooding while smartly reordering messages to improve latencies, great convenience additions like a "Next Active Tab" shortcut, and much, much more, along with a large number of bugfixes and tweaks to round things out. Note: All fixes made since RC1 are marked with a "[New since RC1]" label in the changelog. Internet Analyst Mark Mahaney at Citi Investment Research is predicting the Kindle e-book reader offered exclusively by Amazon.com will sell 378,000 units this year, up from his previous estimates by a factor of two and well above the growth rate of Apple's iPod in its early years. His previous estimates of the $350 device's sales have also been bu...
CitiGroup analyst Mark Mahaney said the device may be the gadget gift of the holiday season, selling double his original estimate of 190,000.
Bloomberg reports that a Citigroup analyst is doubling the projection of the number of Kindles Amazon.com may sell this year. The number has increased from 190,000 to 380,000. The analyst also says, "Kindle is becoming the iPod of the book world." The company may sell 380,000 Kindles in 2008, up from its earlier projection of 190,000, Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney wrote yesterday in a research report. Apple Inc. sold 380,000 iPod music players in 2002, the first year they were sold, according to Mahaney. He recommends buying the stock. "Kindle is becoming the iPod of the book world," Mahaney wrote. "Kindle could be one of the top `gadget' gifts this holiday season." Amazon.com, which began as an online bookseller, introduced the paperback-sized Kindle in November and has increased the number of books, magazines and newspapers offered by two-thirds. Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos wants to compete with Apple by offering media services, including movie and music downloads, and reduce its reliance on sales of books, CDs and DVDs. "Kindle's apparent success highlights the very significant and consistent innovation focus that Amazon has maintained over the past five years and helps hedge the company against the digitization of media products," Mahaney wrote in the note. Companies in Germany and France are plotting Kindle killers but Amazon.com can probably can remain the ebook device leader unless Steve Jobs and Apple are also plotting a Kindle killer. Estimates for 201
Apple has already shipped over three million units of the iPhone 3G, claims analyst Michael Cote, a former T-Mobile executive. If accurate, the figure may mark extremely high sales, far in excess of general Wall Street predictions between three to four million for the whole of the current quarter. The iPhone 3G is already believed to have sold ap...
Filed under: Analysis / Opinion, Apple Financial, iPhoneA month ago, Apple was crowing about selling one million iPhone 3G handsets over its opening weekend. In a month, they've tripled that figure. According to Fortune and analyst Michael Cote of the (eponymous and nascent, from what I can Google) Cote Collaborative, Apple has already hit the three million mark, with many investors expecting only three to four million handsets sold by the end of the quarter. Cote is a former T-Mobile executive, who Scott Moritz says has been accurate with his predictions in the past. It took over 10 weeks for the original iPhone to sell just one million handsets. The iPhone 3G accounts for almost a third of all iPhones sold, ever. Cote says that meeting demand will be Apple's challenge going forward, as it enters 20 new countries on August 22 -- almost doubling its market presence worldwide. "The demand is so strong it may impact or delay the new countries coming on," he said.Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

These are the 10 top-rated submissions and they definitely put the urban back in urbane. Giant Ginkgo takes the gold with a voyeuristic view of a dense office building. Ginkgo will be receiving a subscription to Wired magazine and a digital picture frame. Since there were so many great photos that we thought should've received more votes, we've also compiled a Wired.com Editor's Choice City Photo Gallery. Our next twice-monthly photo contest is parties. We want you to prove that Wired.com readers know how to throw down on the dance floor. Check out the contest page for more information. by Patti Wigington You know, I think it's a clear mark of just how differently Pagans see things from non-Pagany folks, when I read this story in the Huffington Post and wondered just why it was even a big deal: Matthew McConaughey to Plant Placenta. Actor Matthew McConaughey and his partner Camila Alves recently had a son, Levi. McConaughey decided to save the baby's placenta and plant it under a tree in an orchard, in hopes of fertilizing the land. He went on to say that when he was visiting Australia, he met some Aboriginal people who told of "a placenta tree that was on the river ... and all the placentas of all that tribe, all that clan, whatever aboriginal tribe that was, all the placentas went under that one tree and it was this huge behemoth of just health and strength... This tree was just growing taller and stronger above the rest of Mother Nature around it. It was gorgeous." Now, I think this is really cool. I think it's a fabulous thing -- after all, what symbolizes life and fertility better than a placenta?
We're confident that this release is the best and most robust version of Konversation published so far, and upgrading comes highly recommended to all users. Enjoy!
