The Old English term “wyrd” describes that inexorable force and principle guiding the forward motion of the Universe. The concept was well-know since ancient times. It was known as Urd or Ord to Scandianvia and Germany. Wyrd corresponds to Fate. Karma and Kismet are similar concepts, if less well-defined. Wyrd is an evolutionary force rather than mere “cause and effect.” In this it differs from Karma. While the progress of Wyrd can be discerned through divination, it is not “written in stone.’ We speak of Wyrd having several levels. There is the overall Wyrd of the Universe. Part of that is the Wyrd of nations, and of regions, of groups and families and individuals. Each is headed toward a general destination, and each can affect its destination through its actions. This destination is akin to Destiny. Each of us is born into this life with a general destination in mind. Wyrd coordinates all, as part of its goal toward evolution. Our personal experience is a mix of Wyrd and our own input. We can alter our Wyrd, although some situations that each person faces seem inevitable. Are they? Perhaps there are special events which each of us must face, as part of the overall Wyrd of mankind. Perhaps it is less “inevitability” than “probability.” You will be better able to discern these things as your progress with the Old Wisdom.
